2020 wasn’t all bad. I discovered I have a brother.
And we were interviewed on CBC Radio. And earlier in the year a niece we didn’t know about has also been welcomed into the family fold!

2020: when taking a moment to look up

Between personal emails, Flickr, Instagram, and even Facebook (which I really do not care for), I feel I’ve petered out in talking about how 2020 wasn’t the end of the world and how 2021 is only bound to be a better year. So today I’ll leave a wish at the end that is bound to be different from any you are likely to read elsewhere.

For now, rather than me rattle on, here are a few of my favourite images from 2020. They aren’t all the pretty ones, but some bring back special times or special meaning.

the first of the handwritten letters received
an exceptional getaway with friends a month before the pandemic
pre-lockdown: the last time we were able to have friends over to share a meal
I saw this on FB and acted on it — that’s the card I bought and sent to him
I wrote and sent several during the pandemic
many walks; some local, some not
the first neighbourhood signs of tributes to health care workers
in my yard
deserted streets and personal distancing
signs of the times
I too did my share of baking
the maker of smiles
a little beauty every day
family
may possibly be the most special image of the year
a memorable sunset paddle — and a drowned camera
so many moments
at home: a little beauty every day
those daily walks: near the water
the bold
the ignored or forgotten
the overlooked
traces of where we have been or where we were headed
there is always sunshine, and brighter stopping points ahead
the subtle calm we simply need to see
perhaps we need only keep looking up and out

My wish for 2021, I hope you will begin to get some of your favourite photos printed this year. Not just the pretty ones but, more importantly, the one’s taken during special moments, or of those you love. It’s the greatest feeling and you and your family will forever have them to treasure as you view them over the years.

“A photograph doesn’t feel real until it is a tangible physical object I can hold in my hand.” said Stephen Johnson

  1. Discovering your blog has been a wellspring for me. It is so easy to find what is wrong with the world on social media, but your posts and photos prove there is just as much beauty, love and wonder out there too!

  2. Thank you for showing us what a truly beautiful year we just lived through. I accept your challenge to look up and out! (also to print some photos) Happy new year, Diane!

  3. I wish for you all to know that I have responded to my cousin for her amazing comment here. I also want you all to know that she is incredibly talented in her own ways, as each of us is. She is a very special person!
