Whether it’s cool to be square — or not — I’m doing it anyway. In an effort to get back to photographing more (and posting here on my website), I’ve decided to take on a photo project. You guessed it. For me, 2024 is going to be the year of the square format. I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

Here are a few squares taken in the past year and a bit.

Are you working on any projects this year, or this winter? Or maybe you’re learning a new language? Or embarking upon a new adventure?

  1. Hello Diane, I found you in a search for handwritten letters, but I am taken by the boat photogragh in this project. I also love ships. I write letters to my grandchildren and a couple of pen pals. I intend to read all your posts about letters. Ragards, Don

  2. Hi Diane, I’ve been intrigued by your blog post since first reading it a week ago. I considered a few ideas for a new photography project— just black and white or just photos to accompany my favorite poems. But on an instinctive level I kept coming back to “light” — which I kept resisting because there isn’t so much light readily observable in my part of the Willamette Valley during winter. Yet “light” persisted. And when I awoke this morning here in Seattle — where Susan and I are visiting for a few days — I saw a few unusual glimpses of light and realized that it’s inevitable that I choose light. I think it’s actually chosen me, for some reason. Thanks for sharing such a thought-provoking blog post. — Andrew
