Three Cheers for 2023. Here’s to acts of kindness; following — and acting upon — our dreams; and regularly sharing meals with family and friends.

It’s as good a time as any to shed a thing or two. Here’s to shedding life weeds (especially wasted time on social media) and shedding assumptions (rather than assuming, let’s look for legitimate sources and think for ourselves).

Let’s read more books, sing and dance more, take more walks, print photos of family moments, make some art, write some letters, play more, go barefoot, and sit with silence from time to time. Surprise yourself.

“What are life weeds? All of the unwanted things that creep into our lives and before we know it they have choked the life out of the things that actually do matter.”

  1. I love this concept of ‘life weeds’ choking out the things that matter. And how they creep up on us and take over without us noticing, if we don’t pay attention. Happy new year to you.

  2. Diane – what a lovely sentiment to start the New Year off right. I really like this idea of “life weeds,” they’re a perfect metaphor for all the distractions and irritations of modern life that take away from meaningful life and time spent.

Managing these weeds will be an ongoing, never-ending task. Sure, you can get rid of all the weeds in one fell swoop, but you wind up killing the stuff you want to keep in the process. Slow, methodical, and persistent is the way to go.

Happy New Year to you and your family. May 2023 be filled with much health and joy.

  3. May the new year provide us many opportunities to fulfill these acts! I would like to work on shedding as I think that is my biggest impediment.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
