Winston Churchill must have had ‘good’ in him. He’s known to have said, “There’s something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” Anyone who understands that connection and how it benefits the soul, is not wrong.

Born horse-crazy, as people used to put it, I’ve had a life-long love affair with horses. Although I no longer have horses, they continue to draw my eye and my interest. It became evident at one point, that despite how much I love horses and being around them, they are incredibly costly even if living on an acreage or farm. They are also every bit as social as any pet dog. And, just like dogs, if we’re going to have them in our life we must also be prepared to ensure they get sufficient exercise and stimulation. So naturally, that involves a considerable investment in time and, on an ongoing basis. Alas, I had to remain content for a time to simply take photographs of horses.

I hope you enjoy a few of the equine images I’ve pulled from the archives.

With every single one of these images — and those still sitting in the archives or printed in photo books — there are distinct memories attached to them. I can recall the situation, the weather, the sounds, the smells (which I love), even some of my thoughts from that day. This is the power of photographs, amplified when you have a physical print in hand.

When your horse follows you without being asked, when he rubs his head on yours, and when you look at him and feel a tingle down your spine …you know you are loved.

  1. these are magnificent. The one with the jockeys, and is that a race-track? that is sooooo evocative! Like I can see that whole scene coming to life all around me, with its noise and dust and heat, and buzz. . . your photo evoked all of that within me, and I don’t even know anything about horses! What a powerful tool your camera is Diane! your cover photo is just gorgeous. I am going to have to learn more ways to say beautiful!

  2. I love this post and admire your dedication to these fine animals. Your photo collection is so revealing . . . we just love what we love and there is no denying it. Coincidentally, I just received a new photo book in the mail today with photographs of the wild ponies in the Grayson Highlands on the Appalachian Trail (Faces of Grayson by Adam Welch). It’s a joy to learn more about you in this way, a little at a time. Hugs!

  3. A splendid collage of photos showcasing the beauty of the horse! Each photo is unique with some that definitely show personality. I love that first one the best.
