Even the dog was invited. They must have been looking forward to us arriving — we could see them standing on the stairs through the sidelight window. We were greeted with the warmest of smiles. I’m so grateful for friends like this, the shared meals, the stories, the laughter, the complete letting down of hair and being ourselves.

I’m also grateful that we are all fully vaccinated so we may now gather in our homes. Being together in this way is so very fulfilling for the heart and the soul.

The next afternoon as I prepare dinner, looking out my window, it’s there again. That unique light that only shows up in autumn like a welcome visitor who arrives only that one time a year. The sky is a deep denim, trees wearing their coat of many colours, and then the star of the show — the light. That brilliant yellow light arriving at its low angle. It’s as though it wants us to really pay attention because what is before us, will soon be gone.

After dinner and everything is cleaned up and put away, I read for a while. When I walk back into the living room where the lights are dim, the sight of her catches my breath. First I grab the camera to capture that moment, then sit down and play for a few minutes.

  1. As always you bring inspiration and a reminder to be in the moment.
Joy and comfort comes in moments if we are open to the possibilities.

  2. If I have to face something challenging I visualise my grandchildren’s faces. In February I had to have my heart shocked back into normal rhythm. At the time I was the proud grandma of a 12yr old and 3yr old plus twins due in July. I got the faces of 12 and 3 into my head and just as I was going under saw two shadowy little forms behind them. “The twins have come to be with me” I sleepily acknowledged and then my last thought, “oh, they are boys”. In July our daughter in law presented us with healthy twin boys. I suppose I had a 33% chance of being correct but still a little bit magical.
P.S. Heart is ticking just fine.

  3. That is my sort of sky. Of course, when the sky here is denim, we batten the hatches!
I’ve lived in the tropics longer than anywhere else, yet I miss the four distinct seasons still. Perhaps even more, as I get older.

  4. Beautiful standout autumnal colors against that denim sky! I love how you characterize the color of the sky. I can hear the ivories being tickled.
