Sandy & Travis Wedding :: Bezanson (and Grande Prairie), Alberta

I had the pleasure of photographing Sandy & Travis’s wedding this past weekend. What a wonderful day being around such warm and loving people — Sandy & Travis, and their families as well. Beautiful people.

While I was at the bride’s parents home as the bride and her ‘ladies’ were getting ready, I had a creative second shooter busy with the groom and his groomsmen. I’ll show you a few of her amazing photos next week when I’m back in town but in the meantime, if you’re in need of a very capable second shooter, check out Kristen’s portfolio on her website, KAJ Photography. I’ll write more next week.

And here is the handsome groom getting the very first glimpse of his beautiful bride.

As you can see we had incredible weather. In fact, I got heat stroke, but no one knew of course — there was an important day to chronicle!

So many wonderful memories for me of that day so I know Sandy & Travis will be able to relive their special day through the many photographs taken that day. I’ll trickle a few more next week sometime. Both families are really talented on the dance floor as well, not to mention some fine singing and guitar playing. Weddings are so joyful!

McL Family :: Family & Child Photographer, Grande Prairie

The McL family has been patiently waiting for a preview. As I was deciding which to post for this peek from the session, I got carried away because I wanted to share lots of them. So I’ve shaved down my selections, reducing the numbers to just a few teasers.

It was a really hot day but we had some nice open shade in much of their backyard. K obviously has a great interest and talent in gardening. She had a gigantic red begonia that would be the envy of any gardener, strawberries nearly ripe and ready for eating, a pond, and some interesting ornamental plants that I hadn’t seen before. My entire time with this family was so enjoyable. Of course, I always love photographing children and sure enjoyed the intelligent and interesting B and his sister S, who loves cars and posing.

B may look serious in this first image, but he’ll easily shift from serious to giggles, as you’ll see below where he’s playing with his dad.

Little S also seems to enjoy Sweet Williams, or does that far away look mean she’s thinking of cars, I wonder.

Or maybe she was thinking of sharing the flowers with her mom.

Thank you so much K and C for inviting me to your home and getting to spend some relaxing time with your family. I really enjoyed getting to know your children and being a shadow in your backyard. I have some lovely images to share with you very soon.

If you’re new to visiting my photo journal or website, welcome! If you are not familiar with custom on-location photography, I welcome you to click on the “Client Info” tab above to learn more. One of the other bonuses with a custom photographer is the level of quality of your finished boutique products. I’m including the condensed version below of what you can expect from me when you order beautiful boutique products from your custom photo session.

All prints, portraits, canvas gallery wraps, and custom albums are colour corrected, appropriately edited, and are then finished at a Professional lab specifically for professional photographers. All wall portraits are mounted on 2 mm styrene, as they should be, to protect your valuable portrait from creases, folds, or damage and is also intended for long life. I will not compromise quality for a cheaper and inferior final product. My Portrait Collections (in 2010) start from $300, Weddings from $1600 (with a mini-option for small weddings at $500), and an average Portrait Session investment is usually $550 (2010 pricing). I Don’t Hang Babies :: Grande Prairie Custom Photographer

Many of you, especially my clients, are well aware of my stance on photographing newborns as well as older babies. To repeat what I quote on my website and here on my photo journal, “If you’re interested in things like … hanging newborns in nets … I’m probably not the photographer for you.” There is more to that statement, but that’s the part that applies directly to my philosophy on photographing newborns and other babies. I also am not hung up (sorry for the pun) on insisting that the newborn be photographed in the first 10 days or 2 weeks of his/her little life. Anytime that you are ready is fine with me. Besides I don’t need to mold your newborn into contortions so it doesn’t matter if they are sleeping or wide awake.

Yes, there is a huge trend these days with photographers, and rampant among amateur photographers, taking photos of infants hanging from nets, hanging from trees, and with their delicate hands holding their heads up in a most unnatural and unsafe manner (you know the ones where the babes are propped up on their elbows, head-on-hands). This follows the skillfully recreated Anne Geddes images, which by the way are conducted in a very safe manner (albeit very unnatural) with multiple hands and arms at the ready. Those safety devices and hands/arms are photoshopped out later on, by the way, in the case of Anne Geddes.

My style, as many of you are aware, is entirely different. Sure, I like to create some artistic images but my version of art does not include posing babies in totally unnatural ways. I prefer to focus on the true essence of the people I photograph and that includes infants. With babies I love to capture how they sleep, how they wake up, how they scrunch themselves up, or wrap a finger around mom or dad’s fingers. I love to capture the love or joy in the face of the parents or how they hold their treasured newborn. It’s important to me to capture the real babe, naturally, so that years and decades from now the parents and the child can look back and see (or remember) those special real moments. Not some contrived pose that was the whim of the photographer.

So I won’t pose your baby in some artificial, unreal, or unsafe pose. No poses for me because in the future, those poses will be just that: poses. They won’t reveal the genuine moments, the true essence of your precious newborn. I don’t treat babies like some still life as if they were oranges or pears. They are babies, darling infants you brought into this world, so I aim to capture the beauty and magic of their (and your) real life.

Sure, I’m willing to photograph a baby in a vintage carriage, a laundry basket, or alongside a football (if Dad’s a die-hard football fan), for instance. But I still won’t pose your darling babe; we’ll simply use those props as meaningful tools. That’s why I suggest to the parents to consider something that is meaningful to them and their life so that the prop has true significance. That item could be a special quilt or blanket handmade by a family member, or something of significance to you and/or your spouse, a toy one of you had as a child, or any other item of sentimental value.

My focus, when photographing newborns and other babies (as well as children or adults) is a lifestyle approach. I want you to look back on those photographs and remember that specific moment in a meaningful and heartwarming way; not to look back on it as a photographer who has used your child as still life incorporating some current trend.

If you are soon to give birth or have recently given birth, please contact me and we’ll discuss the types of portraits you envision. I look forward to capturing your new infant’s life in a meaningful and heartwarming way. Together we’ll create a lovely family heirloom you can proudly treasure for years and decades to come.

Ask me about birth photography — capturing the emotions and elation of giving birth.

Child Photographer :: Grande Prairie, Alberta and surrounding areas

This young lad from a photo shoot last week had such a serious look on his face. His profile is so appealing to me, not to mention his super deep brown eyes. With this image where I captured his serious look, I added a tinted haze to the black & white version simply to emphasize that serious moment.

And here are those deep brown eyes.

Sneak Peak of L’il Blue Eyes :: Grande Prairie Custom Photographer

I had the pleasure of being invited to the T family home to take photographs of their first born. She’s a cute-as-a-button little girl and boy-oh-boy does she have proud parents! While I was in their home, I also got to meet baby Adrian’s proud grand parents visiting from ‘down East’. You should see her nursery! Beautifully painted and decorated to the nines with so many incredibly special touches, all done by her grandparents.

Did I mention how happy the parents are?

In fact, thanks to a conversation I had with them, I am bringing back the 8×10 special (see the end of this post for details) plus I’m kicking it up a notch! Thanks K. Oh and it’s not hard to see what a heartwarming look of pride the new dad is wearing these days.

High School Senior / Grad Photographer :: Grande Prairie, Alberta (and surrounding service areas)

black & white close up of teenage cello student

You can tell how much I enjoyed doing this particular photo shoot — can’t help but show you more. Since I’m showing another of these photos of the music students, I thought it was an ideal time to remind everyone about unique photos of the [high school] senior in your life.

You know those graduation gown photos you find in your yearbook? The ones that moms and dads love to hang on the wall. I’m looking to take that to a cooler level. No cap and gown. We’re headed outside or a meaningful indoor location. You wear what you want and what reveals you as you really are, and you do what you want, or what demonstrates who the real you is – they’re your photos. Let’s reveal your style.

You can include props too if there is something who says who you are at this time in your life. It could be a musical instrument, sports equipment, your hobby, even a stack of your school books, a pet, or anything that has meaning to you right now.

If you are interested, get in touch. I have a special reduced pricing package from my usual custom photography fees, specifically for those who want to take advantage of these unique custom photos. I also promise to make you look great!

This is an important time of your life. Let’s get some great photos to remember it by – let’s do it right!
