Colour My World :: Grande Prairie Photographer – Dogs, Horses

Playing around with some colourful images from the archives. Enjoy.

3 Paint horses on Alberta prairie

I love photographing horses whether they’re simply hanging out, showing off, or working. The same can be said about photographing dogs and people :)

Springer Spaniel swimmingThis one was easy to capture. She’s our 11 year old Springer Spaniel. It doesn’t matter to her that the water is barely above zero and that the water is so cold it numbs fingers within seconds (if held in the water). I love how the water ripples and bends the light and reflections. Something magical about water. I hope you’re having a magical weekend.

In addition to custom on-location photo sessions, Diane will also license images for any use including advertising, corporate, promotional, editorial illustration in magazines and books, web, media, presentations, decor, and retail products. Please contact her for details and a quote.

Rural ‘Roots’ :: Freelance Photographer | Grande Prairie, Alberta & surrounding areas

A potpourri today. With this first image I love the story it tells.

dsc_4441
The next one simply shows how pigs are meant to be raised, not crowded in concrete pens where they can’t move or breathe fresh air, or do what pigs are meant to do.

This family walks the walk. They are a great example that it is fully possible to raise cattle in a sustainable way. This was an excellent assignment.

A few images from some of my freelance editorial assignments. Enjoy.

PS: I often forget to remind readers but each week the newspaper that I write for also posts my environmental columns online after the paper goes out in print. Here is last week’s Everyday Earth Wise.

Life’s Sweet Ordinary

Winston Churchill said it best,

“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”

dsc_2397
These horses may be covered in mud and already have the beginning of their winter coat but to me they and this image are the epitome of life’s sweet ordinary. Taken on a recent trip to Edmonton, before the snow fell. (Since I was showing them mud and all, this photo is entirely straight out of the camera without any adjustments to colour or exposure — au natural.)

The Difference a Few Days Make

Some of you are anxiously awaiting my tutorial on how I make my designer envelopes — it’s coming but I just had to do this post first!

dsc_2392

A trio of horses I spotted under the amazing Alberta autumn sky near Teepee Creek, Alberta

Driving to Edmonton this past weekend, it was a beautifully sunny Autumn day in Alberta. I took both of these on my way to Edmonton (along with at least half a dozen others). This is really a poor representation of our current weather but it was so enjoyable, I thought it demonstrated the difference to today’s reality. Today I had to shovel snow twice and just now my husband went out and shoveled again. I didn’t bother taking photos of the snow because it does not impress me — I really, really, really dislike winter. Instead I ironed, shoveled snow, drove the treacherous roads to pick up some milk and mail, and got cold and wet walking the dogs today.

“Taken at the crest of Highway 43 just heading down into Chickadee Creek, north of Whitecourt Alberta. Those yellow trees among the swamp spruce are tamarack.”

I’m beginning to get caught up somewhat so general posts like this will likely occur as winter burrows its way. No more hanging clothes on the line, no more single layers (from now on it’s dressing like the Goodyear blimp), and no more pleasant times outdoors. From now on it’s uncomfortable clothing and heavy winter boots, lots and lots of shoveling, more cold than I care to consider, and far too much time indoors. The one positive thing about spending so much time indoors for the next several winter months is that I will be doing some baking. I have a bowl of apples waiting to be turned into crisp and some frozen blueberries that are likely going to end up as pie. Oh and, of course, there will be many batches of cookies to come as well. This Saturday, being Halloween, I will be making popcorn balls — more for my husband than the rare trick-or-treater who may show up.

EDIT: I decided to go outside and take a snapshot so you’ll believe me about the snow.

Ranch Life :: Freelance Photographer, Grande Prairie & northern Alberta

Kids are so enjoyable to photograph. Even the sweet shy ones always come around in no time at all! Even if you haven’t met this delightful young fellow, you still get a sense of his personality. Isn’t this better to capture real personalities rather than placing family members in awkward poses and asking them to say “cheese”? Simple. Natural. Genuine.

Busiest Week Ever … so far

Oh my gosh peoples — this has been my busiest week ever photographically speaking. And talk about a wide range of experiences. I can’t yet share many sneak peeks because I must, must, must finish editing one from last week first. It’s interesting sometimes the people I meet. I was exposed to some intriguing people and, if I was still active full time in freelance writing, oh goodness did I encounter stories this week. One of which I must keep quiet until the magazine is on the news stands, but at least I can share a photo or two (this is from the magazine shoot I did). Then it’s back to finishing an earlier photo shoot so one of my clients can finally see all their selected proofs. Oh gosh, I love what I do and do what I love. Tell me what you love to do!! I LOVE to meet people and capture their stories (Love it!).

dsc_0581This guy has a great vision! I could spend all kinds of time with this sustainably-minded family. What a great evening that was (above). {This one isn’t SOOC; I did a bit of a vintage treatment to it obviously.}

dsc_0638This 14 month old boy is already a savvy Saskatoon picker! No, he wasn’t one of the subjects of my photo shoot but I couldn’t resist quickly moving over and squatting to get a shot of him.

dsc_1747One day he’ll be able to pick n’ run like his older brothers!

dsc_1744Doesn’t her calf look like a buffalo calf? This family runs their cattle operation in a highly sustainable way, raising them and finishing them on lush (rotated) pastures rather than sending them to feedlots. This is just one aspect of their amazing life. I could write oodles about this family — not to mention everyone else I’ve had the pleasure to shoot. Did I mention I love what I do? Oh yea, I did already.

This is a long weekend here in Canada. My dear husband has headed out to Edmonton for the weekend (missing him already) though I have another photo shoot over the weekend. Have a truly enjoyable and fulfilling weekend everyone!

Horse / Equine Photographer || Grande Prairie, Alberta

I thought I’d share a few horse images from my archives. My peonies have begun to bloom, the last lilac bush is in full scent, the penny-shaped leaves of the quaking aspen flutter and wave at me, and the scent of fresh mown lawn (hubby is busy) comforts me today.

For the horse lovers out there, I’ve been reading the inspirational words and admiring the amazing artwork of Kim McElroy for several years. If you enjoy inspirational poetry or soulful prose and love equine art, I recommend checking out Kim’s website or her Spirit of Horse blog.

Equine Love:: Grande Prairie lifestyle Horse Photographer

paint horseAlthough I no longer have horses, I adore them and am thrilled to bits every opportunity I get to photograph them. These are all clients’ horses — I’ll have to dig out some of the old photos of my  horses one of these days and scan them to share here.

Living in the country seeing wildlife is a regular, often daily, occurrence. This morning, however, my  husband and I saw something we’ve never seen before: a mule deer doe with triplets. Yes, three little fawns in tow. No I didn’t take any photos because, even with my 300mm lens, the resulting photo would have shown a lone deer as a spot on the photo with three tiny specks … you know one of those photos where someone says, “if you look really closely you’ll see ___”. So, I chose simply to watch them with our binoculars until they slowly made their way across the field. Triplets! Oh, and more horse photos to come soon.
