Some of you are anxiously awaiting my tutorial on how I make my designer envelopes — it’s coming but I just had to do this post first!

A trio of horses I spotted under the amazing Alberta autumn sky near Teepee Creek, Alberta

Driving to Edmonton this past weekend, it was a beautifully sunny Autumn day in Alberta. I took both of these on my way to Edmonton (along with at least half a dozen others). This is really a poor representation of our current weather but it was so enjoyable, I thought it demonstrated the difference to today’s reality. Today I had to shovel snow twice and just now my husband went out and shoveled again. I didn’t bother taking photos of the snow because it does not impress me — I really, really, really dislike winter. Instead I ironed, shoveled snow, drove the treacherous roads to pick up some milk and mail, and got cold and wet walking the dogs today.

“Taken at the crest of Highway 43 just heading down into Chickadee Creek, north of Whitecourt Alberta. Those yellow trees among the swamp spruce are tamarack.”

I’m beginning to get caught up somewhat so general posts like this will likely occur as winter burrows its way. No more hanging clothes on the line, no more single layers (from now on it’s dressing like the Goodyear blimp), and no more pleasant times outdoors. From now on it’s uncomfortable clothing and heavy winter boots, lots and lots of shoveling, more cold than I care to consider, and far too much time indoors. The one positive thing about spending so much time indoors for the next several winter months is that I will be doing some baking. I have a bowl of apples waiting to be turned into crisp and some frozen blueberries that are likely going to end up as pie. Oh and, of course, there will be many batches of cookies to come as well. This Saturday, being Halloween, I will be making popcorn balls — more for my husband than the rare trick-or-treater who may show up.

EDIT: I decided to go outside and take a snapshot so you’ll believe me about the snow.

  1. Beautiful shot of the horses, Diane. Is that a blue eye or two I see on two of the horses? Don’t see that terribly often.

  2. I still recall the quietness a fresh snowfall brings. It’s a wonderful feeling and you’ve captured it beautifully on these pines. The horses are just gorgeous. We owned two horses in the 80’s. I haven’t ridden since.

  3. We had 15 cm of snow Thursday … all gone today … or mostly all gone. A beautiful day today.

We’ve had a few trick or treaters but VERY quiet at the moment.

I’ve been busy doing up a memorial for D’s dad and it is taking ALL of my creative time. I think it will end up being a great keepsake … we are giving it to all the family members for Christmas. We also have gone into a lot of genealogy on his Dad’s side and have found that there is more Metis in that side than we at first thought! It has been fun and interesting.

Love the picture of the horses! I keep debating about a DSLR, especially since my G9 died and early death but can’t justify the cost. I’m hoping Airmiles will come out with the one I want and then I won’t have to put out any cash!

  4. Gorgeous photos, Diane! The snow one is amazing. Although we’ve had a cold spell here in Tucson, the idea of snow is incomprehensible to us. But it’s simply beautiful!

Today is Halloween, my favorite holiday. I’m so excited about seeing all the little children in their costumes as they happily wander the streets tonight.

  5. I really like the photo of the structure in the woods above Whitecourt. It looks like a sixties relic from an abandoned super-secret space science centre where they worked on alien stuff. I think that it must be that the best photographs engage our imagination 🙂

    Love the horses, too!

I can’t comment on the snowy trees – lovely as they may be – Grande Prairie is just too close to Edmonton to be seeing that kind of snow right now – yikes! 🙂

  6. A fine shot of the horses who pose who beautifully. I especially like the natural looking colors. Fine images today. I would ask that you keep that snow up there so it won’t get lost and wander down here! 🙂

  7. OH MY GOODNESS !!! Diane ! .. I knew there was snow out there some where but I had no idea you were so stuck in with it.
Your pictures are so beautiful .. the horses are amazing especially the middle horse who looks like he/she ? has blue eyes .. that struck me right away. I still love the smell of horses, since I was a little girl and had a ride on one called Peaches .. my sister was on Carmel .. I was about 3 years old and I never forgot that : )
Those beautiful evergreen trees with the snow “icing” as in cake ? LOL … so pretty. But I understand how long winter is for you there .. seems never ending and cabin fever can hit hard. I get that !
We have had one of the rainiest Octobers I can remember and it put a huge dent in my picture mission .. I had so many ideas and they went up in smoke .. I start planning for next October even now ? haha
One thing that is a constant .. I want to take better pictures .. I am never satisfied .. I just know I can do better .. I hope I can be better some day. So for now I will look at yours and enjoy learning what I can from your point of view ? .. I think we both understand some of the very simple, inconspicuous, objects and living creatures make facinating subjects to photograph ?
Take care .. try not to let the snow “win” ? LOL
    Joy : )

  8. Eeeek!! I believe you, I believe you!!! Snow in October is just wrong. OK, maybe if it’s the kind that melts as soon as it hits the ground, I can accept that. But snow that stays in October makes me want to cry!! Poor you!!

  9. Is that really snow!!!! It’s so unseasonably warm here 15C today, I took my Mum out to check her land – she likes to keep an eye on what the tenant farmers are doing 😉 I was standing in the fen without a jacket taking photos of Mum’s fields. The wind was whipping over the flat fields but it was a warm southerly all the way from Africa! All set to change dramatically on Sunday according to the Met Office.

Enjoy the popcorn balls – they sound yummy!

  10. The horses are GORGEOUS!!! Wowsers!!! I LOVE that picture 🙂 I think it’s just about my favourite of all your photos 🙂

Oh man, snow already?!?! Ick 🙁 We haven’t had any snow here yet, but it’ll be coming soon…. remind me again why we live where we do?! 🙂

Funny thing about that picture I took of the leaves on the sidewalk — I did’t even notice the trellis shadow when I took the picture!! And then I was undecided about posting it. Good thing I did, because people seem to like it 🙂
