Cameron Lake, B.C. on Vancouver Island — January 2021

Let me show you around one of our local lakes. It may be January but Mother Nature keeps our lakes open. Listen. What do you hear? It’s so quiet though I hear Chestnut Backed Chickadees. They’re flitting about chatting to one another, as they hunt from cedar tree to cedar tree. The plonk plonk plonk are the gentle waves against that fallen tree in the water. Take a deep breath of that clean, crisp air.

Isn’t that a gorgeous bit of driftwood? Mother Nature is always creating such beautiful art. The recent rains seem to have really plumped it up just for us.

Oh there, the veil of morning is lifting. We’ve timed our arrival well. That hush — the lake is whispering to us. Catkins are already forming on the alders. Watch your step — the water is higher than usual.

These little wild rose bushes should make it once the levels in the lake get back to normal. Don’t the rosehips look like leftover Christmas garland? Birds feast on them.

Oh that’s a lovely sound — the water gently lapping against the roots of these old cedars. The stories these ancient trees could tell. Their boughs cape-like as if to shield their held secrets. We’ve lingered long enough the light is breaking through the clouds. Do you hear that? I think someone else is here.

Oh yes, someone’s out there fishing! He must have been here all along. I hope he’s bundled up out there — the water is cold.

Take in one last big breath of this clean air.

Join me again won’t you? — Diane

  1. The natural beauty in your area takes my breath away, from the driftwood to the hill-rimmed lake. I’m sure I have some of that here if I would only look with fresh eyes… 🙂

  2. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven past that lake, and I’ve never seen it like this before! When I was a kid we used to call it a bottomless lake. I’m not sure how it got that reputation, but I’ve heard it connects underwater to Horne Lake.

  3. you would make an incredible tour guide

wow, on the first photograph. what an perfectly composed capture and the second one reminds me of the head and curly locks of a lion.

  4. A leisurely and relaxing stroll with beautiful views! I heard the lapping waves against the log in the water. And what an eye-catching piece of artwork Mother Nature created in that driftwood. Excellent find! It resembles a “fluid” tree.
