Her simple statement has remained with me. It was the gravity of her message. She said she’d be taking time away from social media and news in general to take in the real life occurring outdoors. And then she punctuated it by saying she’d also keep her camera charged.

Well, you know how that line hit me. And not just because I love nature and I have embarked upon a photography project. There’s more to it.

I loved her resolve. Her about-face to what is really important in life. Her turning her back on what so many of us are wasting our time on.

just a goat and some sheep in a field near my favourite market

By taking my own hiatus, turning my back on social media, and getting out and about, these are a few of the things I did not miss out on:

  • The cedar-y fragrance after a heavy rain;
  • The most astonishing rainbow balanced atop the Salish Sea;
  • Listening to an amazing CBC podcast about a group of young Indigenous men who are supporting each other as they heal from their pasts and build a new future for themselves;
  • Saw eagles in the trees while walking along the river;
  • The musky smell of sodden leaves after the heavy rains, thick and layered as if imitating filo pastry;
  • By flipping through some old photographs, I took a trip down memory lane;
  • and, acquired a multitude of new photographs for my project (among other things).
there’s an eagle up there (and many more in the other trees)

Wishing you a week ahead filled with all things that nourish you and make you smile.

  1. i think we have to strike a balance between our lives around us and how we reach beyond so i’m in agreement with how you’ve worded your thoughts. i do love seeing how the rest of the world lives. how else would i have known you had so many eagles? : – ) Heidi doesn’t seem bothered by them. Our Brady (Irish Setter) would not have been able to walk away with them in the trees.

  2. Beautiful autumnal series of photos! I agree with her simple statement. The time wasted is one of the reasons that I am not on Facebook, Twitter or other social media. Along with the fact that I know so many people who have gotten in trouble by what they say or post on those platforms. I used to post images on my photoblog on weekends about 10 years ago, but wanted to claim my weekends back.
