Robins everywhere this morning. Their chatter reminded me of distances and time long ago.

There are things like the sweet fragrance of lilacs, the annoying caw of the returning crows in spring, or the smell of percolated coffee that can pull me back to another place and time. Those memories seem so far away, I cradle them deep within me, sometimes even forgetting them, and then, with a single sound or smell, can be escorted back to a beautiful, alluring moment.

My mom bought me a pair of mini birds that she discovered at a garage sale. Knowing I love birds, I can picture her and how pleased she must have been when she came across these still life avians. She always loved giving me special things. Pictured here are those two little, tweety darlings. My mother is gone now but the birds sit beside the sink where I see them and love them every day. A wonderful memory of my mom.

  1. you’ve photographed these treasured items beautifully and described the feelings they evoke in a very touching way

as the youngest of five children, i recall Spring days when my mother and i were the only ones not in school or at work, and she would point out to me a Robin Redbreast as she called them, and tell me it was a sign of Spring (that was in Ohio)

after all these years in Arkansas, it was only this winter that i realized i now live where the Robin Redbreasts’ go for the winter
