Loving the Square

One of my favourite crops for artwork, whether it’s photographic art or a painting is the square. {Another favourite is a panoramic rectangle — say a 10 x 20 for instance, but that’s a different post.}

I’m not sure if it’s the symmetry of a square crop, or if it’s something else that makes the square crop appeal to me. Whatever the draw is, it works for me. The square crop is also ideal and really appealing for cards such as thank you or greeting cards, for instance. Not all images will work in a square crop, however, so the image needs to be carefully chosen, as these examples demonstrate.

Do you like a square crop? Show me an example of one of your favourite square crops (leave a link so I can come take a look).

I like a square crop myself though I don’t have one handy to link to. Like that first picture.

These are lovely, Diane. The pom took me by surprise tucked away with the apples of the same shade. I do like the square very much. In fact, right now it’s my preference. However, I don’t care for being locked into it by a theme. Missing PixelPost, but knowing I can’t go back.

I used to take pictures with a Rolleiflex which took square pictures. Then it was a decision to make a rectangle and not use part of the negative. I like your square shots very well. Nice job of careful focus to give emphasis where wanted. Well done.

I do really like the square crop 🙂 I’ve used square frames with 12″ x 12″ mat openings for my pet photo art gallery wall. I had the photos printed in 12″ x 18″ format so I could play around the the positioning within the mat opening to frame each picture really nicely 🙂

I love your photography. What lens did you use for both of these, may I ask?
