We had an emergency last night, having to take one of our dogs in to the vet clinic. Thankfully, she’s going to be okay. (Yes, that’s our Pearl cooling down in her kiddy pool.)

Meet Pearl. She didn’t have an ideal beginning to her life. You know those fairy tales we read to our children about how life hands you lemons but ends up happily ever-after? Well Pearl is a poster child for that kind of fairy tale. I’m so glad she ended up at our home. With all her problems most people would have had her euthanized long ago, or worse — she could have been mistreated by those who didn’t understand her issues or perhaps also tossed around from foster home to foster home. I admire every one of you out there who adopts a dog from a rescue organization or animal shelter. Thank you for being kind to them. Enjoy your weekend with your loyal four-legged friend.

Remember what Tom T. Hall said in his famous song about watermellon wine: “Old dogs they care about you, even when you make mistakes…”

After your watermelon wine weekend, tell me how your dog (or any pet) enriches your days.

  1. Bless her heart. I’m glad she’s okay for now. Your captures are wonderful. She has such a thoughtful face. (I remember the song too:-)

  2. I’m new to your blog and I just HAD to comment. We have a dog that we got from the animal shelter. A black lab cross. He was apparently left in a bag by the side of the road as a pup. His name is Beau and he is just a blessing to our family. Very meek and mild..( except with cats)…and just like Pearl he is quite the water lover. Glad to hear that Pearl is OK.

  4. Sorry to hear about your doggie emergency 🙁 But good to hear that she’s OK 🙂 We’ve had a few emergency trips to the vet too. Luckily, all but one had a happy ending.

All our dogs are rescues — Kylie from owners who had to get rid of her, Squirt from the Humane Society, and Jackson from Catahoula Rescue. And we took in my brother & SIL’s dog Carbo when they needed to find a new home for him because their daughter was allergic to him. He was like Pearl, with lots of health problems. But I loved him so much and still miss him a lot 🙁

I’m a huge supporter of adopting homeless pets. There isn’t a better feeling than knowing that you’ve given a deserving animal a new lease on life. Or as Ron Burns says, giving them “furever” homes 🙂

  5. These images of your dog are really lovely. She’s such a beauty. Dogs are such wonderful family members.

  6. Glad your pup will be okay. I have cats who enrich my life everyday. They make me laugh at their extreme silliness and they’re great to cuddle with!

  7. Hi Diane,
What a sweet and beautiful dog you have. I hope Pearl is feeling better. You can see in her face that she is completely happy where she is and who surrounds her.
I don’t take too many pet photos but I have one of my dog, which I will provide the link:

And then within the week another pet one of a german shepherd puppy. 🙂

    Peace.

  8. Oh, poor Pearl! I hope it wasn’t too serious and am glad to hear the outcome is okay. Buddy, my Springer does not like water, which I find odd. Aren’t Springers supposed to like water? My dogs enrich my life by forcing me to get out of bed between 5:00 am and 6:00 am, even on the weekends so I don’t miss the morning light. Even if it means I only get three hours sleep, like this morning. =) I consider both of my dogs as rescue dogs, even though I didn’t get them from a shelter. Buddy wasn’t living in the best of conditions and Buster had two previous sets of owners that couldn’t handle his uniqueness.

  9. She’s a beautiful dog. I’m glad she’s going to be okay. I think shelter or rescue dogs make the most loyal companions. They seem to know you’ve rescued them and will often put their life on the line for you in return.

  10. Oh, Pearl is so beautiful. I’m glad she’s going to be okay.

My dogs make me a better person, always showing me what unconditional love is, showing me what pure joy is. Yes, I am definitely a better person for knowing them!

  11. Diane she is so lucky to have you as a “mom” and I love the name Pearl…why did you name her that? So happy to hear that she is OK…thank you for the care you give her and all animals!

Sam is so tolerant of the craziness in the house and he went for his first swim yesterday..he goes in off the side after his ball…we smile from ear to ear at his antics!

  12. Oh…you’ve gotta know that she tugs at my heart. Such a beauty!!! Am so glad to hear she’s alright. Am also amazed that she goes into water. Neither of my Aussies ever have!!
    Beautiful images!
